Cocktail of the Week: The Corpse Reviver #2

In honor of Halloween, we decided to make a spin on the Corpse Reviver #2. This cocktail originated in the early 20th century as a hangover cure. It was thought that the drink could revive anyone … even the dead, hence its name. There are several variations of the Corpse Reviver, numbers 1 through 4, but number 2 seems to be the most popular. I think this is because it’s easy to drink yet strong enough to cure even the worst of hangovers. It’s traditionally made with the ingredients listed below and Cointreau, but I think the drink is better suited without the orange liqueur. So here is my version of the Corpse Reviver #2.

Ingredients

  • Gin (I use a local New England gin from Barr Hill. It has a touch of honey which I think adds a nice balance. But any gin will do.)
  • Lillet Blanc wine-based liqueur
  • Absinthe
  • Lemon juice (only fresh-squeezed will do)
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • Ice

One Serving Recipe

  • 1.5 oz gin
  • 1.5 oz Lillet Blanc
  • 1 oz  fresh lemon juice
  • Absinthe rinse

Add a few ice cubes to your coupe or martini glass and pour in a dash of absinthe. “Rinse” the glass with the absinthe by either twirling it around or stirring it gently with a cocktail spoon. Once the glass is fully coated, dump the ice and absinthe. Next, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the gin, Lillet Blanc and fresh lemon juice. Shake, shake, shake.  Strain into your glass rinsed with Absinthe and garnish with an orange peel.
