Cocktail of the Week: The Sparkling Mezcal
Full transparency here, this cocktail is NOT my creation. I enjoyed it several years ago at a bar somewhere inSan Francisco that I tried really hard to remember but, alas, could not. The cocktails were THAT good. Good enough to forget where I was and what the cocktail’s actual name is. I do, however, remember the ingredients. And after several enjoyable attempts to get the taste right, I think I’ve mastered the original measurements as well.
So, in honor of National Mezcal Day, which just happens to be next Monday, Oct. 21, I give you a sparklingly delicious cocktail featuring smoky mezcal, tart grapefruit, sweet sparkling wine, and just a hint of warm cardamom.
One Serving Recipe
- 1 oz mezcal
- 1 oz fresh grapefruit (it’s extremely important to use fresh grapefruit juice here — purchased juice just won’t do)
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- 1 dash cardamom bitters (I like Fee Brothers brand and it’s widely distributed)
- Chilled sparkling wine to top (any brand of prosecco will do – you can certainly use Champagne but I think in this cocktail prosecco works best)
- Grapefruit peel for garnish (optional)
Add all ingredients, except for the sparkling wine, into a shaker, and stir with ice. Strain into a coupe glass and top with chilled sparkling wine. Garnish with a peel of grapefruit skin if you wish. Super simple and oh so delicious.
